Cozic, Amandine.
A sensitive, precise and rapid analytical method was elaborated to measure simultaneously 5 volatile reduced sulfur compounds (VRSC) ; hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide (OCS), methane thiol (MeSH), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). The study of VRSC in the Bay of Quiberon highlights seasonal and interannual variations of concentrations in epibenthic zone. H2S analyzed near the sediment water interface (anoxic microzones), is more elevated in summer. The OCS distribution is consistent with a predominant photodegradation in winter and a sedimentary source in summer. The variations of MeSH, DMS and DMDS are correlated with the Dinophyceae abundance. In the Seine estuary, the absence of volatile H2S in the up estuary is explained by the...

Geochemical modeling of gold precipitation conditions in the Bloco do Butiá Mine, Lavras do Sul/Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mexias,André S.; Berger,Gilles; Gomes,Márcia E.B.; Formoso,Milton L.L.; Dani,Norberto; Frantz,José C.; Bongiolo,Everton M..
A geochemical modeling of gold deposition was performed using the EQ3/EQ6 software package using conditions inferred from geological, petrographic, geochemical and fluid inclusion data from the Bloco do Butiá gold mine, Lavras do Sul, RS. Gold in the mine occurs only in the pyrite structure (invisible gold). The pyrite occurs associated with white mica (phengite) in the zone of phyllic alteration. The process of gold deposition showed to be related to temperature and pH decrease. The pH decrease was fundamental to gold deposition by destabilization of sulfur species [Au(HS)2- , HAu(HS)2(0) and Au(HS)0] dissolved in the aqueous solution, being Au(HS)0 the main gold transporting complex. The addition of KCl is hard to accept as cause of gold precipitation...

Hygroscopicity and ammonia volatilization losses from nitrogen sources in coated urea Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Faria,Letícia de Abreu; Nascimento,Carlos Antonio Costa do; Ventura,Barbara Paquier; Florim,Gabriela Perissinotto; Luz,Pedro Henrique de Cerqueira; Vitti,Godofredo Cesar.
Hygroscopic fertilizers tend to absorb moisture from the air and may have undesirable characteristics such as moistness, clumping and lower fluidity, hampering the application. The increasing use of urea is due to its numerous advantages, although this nitrogen (N) source is highly susceptible to volatilization losses, particularly when applied to the soil surface of management systems with conservation of crop residues. The volatilization losses can be minimized by slow or controlled-release fertilizers, with controlled water solubility of the urea-coating materials; and by stabilized fertilizers, which prolong the period during which N remains in the amide or ammonia forms by urease inhibitors. This study evaluated the hygroscopicity of and ammonia...

Metabolism of cyanobacteria in anaerobic marine sediments. ArchiMer
Stal, L; Krumbein, W.
Two cyanobacteria isolated from marine microbial mats metabolized endogenous carbon reserves anaerobically in the dark. Microcoleus chthonoplastes reduced elemental sulfur to sulfide and Oscillatoria sp. additionally produced lactate in the absence of elemental sulfur. Under nitrogen fixing conditions, however, no sulfur reduction occurs. Lactate fermentation appeared to be the mechanism of anaerobic carbon degradation under these conditions. With a nitrogenase-reducible substrate, e.g. acetylene, added, lactate fermentation as well as sulfur reduction stops in cultures of Oscillatoria containing nitrogenase. In this case only ethylene production was observed. These cyanobacteria seem to possess the capability to carry out anaerobic dark metabolism...

New insigths on the metabolic diversity among the epibiotic microbial communitiy of the hydrothermal shrimp Rimicaris exoculata ArchiMer
Zbinden, M; Shillito, B; Le Bris, Nadine; De Montlaur, C; Roussel, Erwan; Guyot, F; Gaill, F; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne.
The Rimicaris exoculata dominates the megafauna of some of the Mid Atlantic ridge hydrothermal vent sites. This species harbors a rich community of bacterial epibionts inside its gill chamber. Literature data indicate that a single 16S rRNA phylotype dominates this epibiotic community, and is assumed to be a sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. However attempts Of Cultivation were not successful and did not allow to confirm it. The aim of our study was to test the hypothesis of sulfide oxidation in the gill chamber, by a multidisciplinary approach, using in vivo experiments at in situ pressure in the presence of sulfide, microscopic observations and a molecular survey. Morphology of microorganisms, before and after treatment, was analyzed to test the effect of...

Soil fertility, nutrition and yield of maize and barley with gypsum application on soil surface in no-till Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Michalovicz,Leandro; Müller,Marcelo Marques Lopes; Foloni,José Salvador Simoneti; Kawakami,Jackson; Nascimento,Ronaldo do; Kramer,Luiz Fernando Machado.
Annual crop yield and nutrition have shown differentiated responses to modifications in soil chemical properties brought about by gypsum application. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of gypsum application rates on the chemical properties of a Latossolo Bruno (Clayey Oxisol), as well as on the nutrition and yield of a maize-barley succession under no-till. The experiment was set up in November 2009 in Guarapuava, Parana, Brazil, applying gypsum rates of 0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 Mg ha-1 to the soil surface upon sowing maize, with crop succession of barley. Gypsum application decreased the levels of Al3+ and Mg2+ in the 0.0-0.1 m layer and increased soil pH in the layers from 0.2-0.6 m depth. Gypsum application has increased the levels of...

Sulphur test KCl-40 and growth of the Australian canola industry AgEcon
Two Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) projects in the mid-1980s (Projects 8328 and 8804) funded research at the University of New England to help better understand and improve phosphorus and sulfur management in tropical agricultural systems. As tropical agriculture expands into more marginal land and production systems intensify, the demands for soil phosphorus and sulfur increase. Major outcomes of the research were a better understanding of the nutrient dynamics in South-East Asia and the development of a new and more reliable soil test for available sulfur. The new test (KCl-40) more accurately measured the sulfur available to plants, as it was able to measure the sulfur held within organic matter. A spin-off from the...

Surface application of gypsum in low acidic Oxisol under no-till cropping system Scientia Agricola
Caires,Eduardo Fávero; Maschietto,Evandro Henrique Gonçalves; Garbuio,Fernando José; Churka,Susana; Joris,Hélio Antonio Wood.
The conditions in which a favorable response to a gypsum application can be expected on crop yields are not clear. A 3-year field trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of gypsum application on soil chemical attributes and nutrition and yield of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) on a clayey Typic Hapludox of high fertility and low acidity under no-till in Guarapuava, Parana State, Brazil. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications, and consisted of gypsum application on the soil surface at 4, 8, and 12 Mg ha-1. Gypsum application increased the P content in the soil most superficial layer (0.0 - 0.1 m) and also the exchangeable Ca and S-SO4(2-) contents and the Ca/Mg ratio in the soil...

The biogeochemistry of the suboxic and anoxic zones in the cariaco basin Gayana
Scranton,Mary I; Astor,Yrene; Percy,Dane; Xiaona,Li; Xueju,Lin; Taylor,Gordon T.
A decade-long study of the Cariaco Basin has demonstrated that the suboxic interface in this system is temporally and spatially variable and that it is the home for a diverse and active microbial community. The thickness and structure of the suboxic zone appears to be primarily controlled by the physics of the basin, with oxygen containing intrusions occurring from both eastern and western sills. The microbial populations, which include both heterotrophic and chemoautotrophic micro-organisms, are actively growing at rates which cannot be supported by vertical transport of oxidants or reductants. Our studies suggest that the microbial loop depends on cycling of intermediate oxidation state sulfur species (sulfite, thiosulfate and elemental S) possibly...
